A bank stress test is a simulation or analysis conducted to analyze how a bank will be impacted under adverse market conditions – for example, a financial market crash or recession RecessionRecession is a term used to signify a slowdown in general economic activity.

A stress test of the banking system investigates how bank liquidity and capital would be affected under a number of severe – but plausible – scenarios of potential future events. These hypothetical scenarios describe situations that are expected to have a negative impact on banks’ businesses and balance sheets, such as a recession or a financial market crash.
