Consequently, a decision was made to collaborate with EADMFR in the development of a set of “Basic Principles” that are based upon fundamental international principles, EU Directives [1,2] and previous Guidelines [3] . SEDENTEXCT Project in Europe has focused on enhanced safety and efficacy in the useof CBCT in dental and maxillofacial radiology. One of its objectives is to develop a QA programme, including the development of a tool/tools for QA, and to define exposure protocols. Thus, the SEDENTEXCT Project proposed a QA method Cockmartin L, Bosmans H, Jacobs R, Bogaerts R, Horner K, The SEDENTEXCT Project Consortium (2012) Effective dose range for dental cone beam computed tomography scanners. Download a copy of the guideline The objectives and methodology of the proposed collaborative project are: 1. To develop evidence-based guidelines on use of CBCT in dentistry, including referral criteria, quality assurance guidelines and optimisation strategies.

This need was also recognised by the SEDENTEXCT project. Indeed the content of Work Package 1 deals specifically with the development of such guidelines. Consequently, a decision was made to collaborate with EADMFR in the development of a set of “Basic Principles” that are based upon fundamental international principles, EU Directives [1,2] and previous Guidelines [3] .
In 2011 the European-wide Safety and Efficacy of a New and Emerging Dental X-ray Modality SEDENTEXCT project published guidelines based on what evidence was available at that time. These guidelines, and a more cautious approach to the justified use of CBCT, are endorsed by the authors.

The feedback option is available at the foot of the webpage. A principal aim of the SEDENTEXCT project was to develop evidence-based guidelines dealing with justification, optimisation and referral criteria as applied to CBCT. CBCT imaging allows accurate 3D imaging of hard tissues.• CBCT offers lower costs and a smaller size and radiation dose compared with MSCT.• The disadvantages of CBCT imaging are poor soft tissue contrast and artefacts.• The Sedentexct project has developed evidence-based guidelines on the use of CBCT in dentistry.

The SEDENTEXCT project has suggested that the CBCT dose can be estimated either with the help of two indices (Indices 1 and 2) or with a DAP value. Index 1 is the average of the dose measurements along the diameter of the phantom. The isocentre can be positioned either at the centre of the phantom or it can be off-center.
